Customer Complaint – A Complete Job Review

As like any other person who works in a customer service job, I surely get to see my fair share of customer complaints. Just about on a daily basis, some one or the other comes in to our store to complain about the product or the service or perhaps even both. Although it would not be right to say that all customers are annoying, there are those customers, who especially aggravate me with their right to customer complaints. Please allow me to explain.

Few weeks back, there was this guy who ‘mistakenly’ bought a pair of shoes with two left feet. Well, that is the truth. As a matter of fact the shoes department is the one with a fairly high number of customer complaints. This gentleman bought the shoes alright, but if he were like you or me, he would have realized that there was something wrong the first time he tried them on. To top it off, he managed to wear these shoes for an almost continuous period of three months before a colleague pointed out that there was something wrong. That is when he came back to the store to lodge a customer complaints about the service offered to him.

As a rule, if he had brought the shoes back in a near new condition, we would have handed him a refund and considered the case closed. However in this particular case, the shoes were not only worn out. They were almost in tatters. And despite everything he only insisted upon his right to file a customer complaint and seek a refund. No matter how much I tried to explain to him politely that though he had purchased and taken home two left shoes, he should have brought the matter to our notice through customer complaints well in advance. And besides he nearly destroyed the shoes that would be of no use to us. Though his loss was one pair, our loss was in effect two good pairs of shoes.Except of course there was another customer who could ‘mistakenly’ purchase two right shoes!

In another case, there was this customer complaint with regards to the lady who bought an artificial mink coat and returned back to the store almost six months later to lodge a customer complaint. Want to know her issue? Well, she had been deceived into buying an artificial mink coat and wanted a refund. Needless to mention, the offending mink coat had been well used and was in fact the worse for wear. But nonetheless file a customer complaint she would.

At times there are customer complaint cases that I find extremely taxing. To help out someone who accidentally made a shopping gaffe is all fine. And the gratitude for such customers is well worth the initial hostility they show. Unlike customers who are determined to take stores for a ride and then demand on the right to file customer complaints to cover their own faults are the ones who get my goat. Even as I am all for encouraging customer complaints as a ration course of action, I find myself ever more reluctant to help out such people.

Why Do I Need a Parenting Magazine?

Often when I interview people for an article, a parent will ask me – ‘why do I need to read a parenting magazine?’ or ‘what can a magazine tell me that I don’t already know?’ or even ‘parenting is something I do by instinct – why should a magazine tell me what to do?’.

In some sense, it is true, isn’t it? Our parents did not read parenting magazines, or browse the Net for information, or attend parenting workshops – they still managed to bring us up OK.

But wait – our parents had another source of information and support that is denied to most of us today – the benefit of an extended family – grandparents, uncles and aunts and cousins who were ready with advice and tips from how to breast-feed a baby to what career your child should consider. In shrinking nuclear families that role has been taken over by magazines and the Internet.

Secondly, our parents lived in a world without much choice – kids went to the neighborhood school, probably learnt music or dance and managed to complete their education and then took traditional career paths – medicine, engineering, Arts, etc. They did not have to contend with IB or CBSE, Abacus and vocabulary lessons, tennis or karate. I am not even going to get into the range of career options available today! With the bewildering array of choices in front of us, from which diaper to is the best to which college to apply to for which course, we are forced to depend on advice and reviews to make sense of all our options.

Thirdly, our parents did not read books on seven habits of effective managers or magazine articles on interior decoration or browse the Net to look up what sickness a cold, cough and peculiar rash indicates. But, we do all that and more; our generation is information-hungry. We base the smallest of decisions on information, and support and validate our choices with reams of data from multiple sources. We actively look out for tips on how to get rid of dark circles – why would we be derisive about someone who looks for information on the so much more important area of parenting?! We live in the age of information, so how much ever we would like to believe that parenting should be driven by instinct, we cannot escape the fact that our decisions need to be based on information. And a good parenting magazine (like ours:) ) will bring that information to your doorstep (or fingertips) – information based on expert insights, proven parenting practices and fresh ideas from around the world.

Fourthly, the world has changed more rapidly in the past two decades that in any other time and this impacts how we rear our children. And it is natural to look to magazines for information in this rapidly-changing world. And even more natural to attend parenting workshops to understand how our relationship and modes of communication with our children need to change as well. For the old rules don’t really work anymore, do they? And workshops and parenting programmes can help you explore how to be a better and more effective parent even as training programmes within companies can help you be more productive in your job!

And finally, I think that a lot of us simply read articles and magazines because we want to be reassured – that what we are doing is right, that other parents face exactly the same set of challenges as us, and that we are not alone in parenting an incredibly smart and intelligent generation of children in a world that is very different from the one we grew up in!

Why Do You Rotate Magazines?

If you take a  magazine * apart you will see that it is a real simple item. You can see the parts are few. Inside the tube of either metal or plastic, you have a follower at the top resting on a spring. The job of the follower is to follow the ammunition up the tube to ensure that it lies at the proper angle to feed into the firearm when its turn comes. Below the spring you have a floor plate and a keeper that closes the  magazine  at the bottom. The floor plate gives the spring a flat, secure footing so that it does not wallow in the  magazine  tube. The keeper keeps all the parts of the  magazine  in the tube.

If you live and practice in a dusty or high humidity area, you should disassemble the  magazines  periodically to get the gunk out. Remember the dirt at the range you wiped off the outside of the  magazine  when you dropped it while practicing a tactical reload? How much of it got inside?

How do you disassemble and clean the  magazine ? This is usually accomplished by slowly removing the floor plate from the bottom. Be careful because the spring is under a little tension. Remove the floor plate, spring and follower. Now clean the parts and the inside of the  magazine  with a brush and gun solvent to remove dirt, dust and fouling from  magazine . Reassemble the  magazine  by reversing the procedure used to take it apart. If you feel you must use lube, use a dry lube.

I try to rotate my  magazines  after cleaning to let the springs rest. Metal springs take a set over time if they are exposed to load stress. I rotate the  magazines  on a specific schedule to relieve this stress.

I keep three  magazines  for range use. These  magazines  are dropped, reloaded, slammed into the gun and changed often during drills. I load these prior to the range with ammunition for the range.

I usually carry two spare  magazines  and I have one in my firearm. These are the cleanest, freshest  magazines  that I own. I load them with specific ammunition suited to the hunt or for personal protection.

My rotation is not my invention. I got it from a friend and from books on tactics. In short:

– Three  magazines  at rest after a complete cleaning

– Three  magazines  for use

– Three  magazines  for practice

Media Series: Issue 3 – Magazine Advertising

Overview of Magazine

Since they are both print media, magazines share some characteristics with newspapers. A couple of the major differences between them are frequency (magazines are issued far less frequently) and paper/print quality (magazines offer the use of better quality paper and graphics). Magazine advertising is generally more oriented toward image and attributes than price so you can focus more on the differentiating attributes of your product or service.

Upside of Magazine

Magazines may not be at their peak from a circulation standpoint but the medium continues to be very effective medium. Here are a few of what we consider to be the most prominent.

  • Circulation is generally large so you can touch a lot of consumers.
  • It’s possible to scale by geography. You can either choose regional publications or work with national ones that have regional flexibility.
  • It is possible to target by consumer interest. You can get a better response by targeting publications that appeal to consumers with a likelihood of interest in your brand.
  • People spend time with their magazines. It is read in a leisurely manner.
  • Magazines are generally kept around for quite a while of often shared or recycled with more than one reader.
  • With most magazines, you can create very high quality ads with intricate layouts and vibrant colors that will print and show well.

Downside of Magazine

Magazine advertising does have its drawbacks, though, and you’ll want to factor these in as you evaluate the best options for your media plan.

  • With so many ads, it can be difficult to get yours noticed.
  • Since pages are fairly large, half or full page ads are needed to get noticed.
  • Magazines are generally not cheap and the higher the circulation the higher the cost.
  • A single magazine ad doesn’t do you much good. You need to advertise frequently.
  • You can’t generally scale it down to a local level effectively. Regional is about as small as you can really go.

Main Thing To Know About Magazine Advertising

I’m a big fan of magazine advertising. If you do it right, I think magazine ads not only do a good job of building brand awareness but you can really make them sell too. Unfortunately, not many people do them well. Magazine ads are often far too complicated with jumbled layouts, graphic confusion and too much copy. If you’re regional or national, magazines are a good idea but don’t just hire a professional to do them for you. Hire someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Feel free to contact us directly if you’d like more information on that.

Before you start, you need to determine your skills and abilities. Update your resume/cv and put yourself in the right frame of mind to face the employment process. There are many options on where to find employment.

Your first port of call should be the Job Center: Job centers provide numerous vacancies for all different kinds of work. Job centers generally update their vacancies board frequently.

They can arrange for interviews, and try match your skills and abilities to relevant jobs.

Another option is newspapers: Local and national newspapers, free papers and papers that exist specifically to advertise new and available jobs. Public libraries have reading rooms where you can find a wide range of existing newspapers where you could check all the recent job postings for free.

Majority of newspapers today have their content available online. You could browse through them one by one and list all the jobs you prefer.

There is a wide range of Journals and   magazines : Every industry and trade has their own periodicals,  magazines  or journals. A place of work is a great place to look. Many companies have job vacancies on their premises, usually in reception. Since these companies such as food retailers make use of internal notice boards, they do not advertise in newspapers and agencies. It wouldn’t hurt to simply walk in and at ask the front desk for employment vacancies. If you’re looking for employment in the building trade, it has long been the most accepted way to simply walk on site and ask the foreman if there’s any jobs going in whatever trade you’re skilled at or as a laborer.

The most cost-effective way of finding any jobs has to be through the internet. The majority of employment agencies, newspapers, top companies,  magazines  and  job  centers tend to have their own website. You could save time by searching through them one by one and apply for jobs online. Employers like to hear from people who can use their initiative and who are motivated enough to chase down employment.

Making use of all these options could save you a lot of time searching for your desired job. You could use all of these methods simultaneously to increase your chances of employment, or at the least to get an interview!

Magazine Writing – How to Write Winning Query Letters

While there are many online writing gigs to be found, magazine writing still offers the most lucrative pay for journalists and other nonfiction writers. The key to opening the door to magazine writing gigs lies within the query letter. To land good magazine assignments, you need to write compelling query letters. This is often true for the fiction writer as well.

Following are tips gleaned from successful freelancers with years of magazine writing experience…

The Query Letter’s Components

Lead — Just as you would write an article with the magazine’s style in mind, it can pay to take the time to do so with your query as well. In fact the opening of a winning query often reads like the lead or first part of the lead to the article.

So just as you would in your article, start your query with a good hook, such as an amazing fact, profound quote, intriguing anecdote, etc.

Summary — After a one or two sentence lead, tell the editor what this article is about, and how you plan to tell the story. Tell the editor what you have in mind for interviews and research sources.

Also weave in a mention of what you can personally bring to the article, including a credential, experience or something else that backs this up. Be confident but not arrogant, and always be courteous and respectful of the editor’s time.

Conclusion — After your summary, provide information such as estimated word count and date of completion, brief information about any art work such as photographs you have (generally not required), mention of any professional or noteworthy writing experience and credentials, whether you’ve included clips (published samples of your writing) and a direct request to submit the piece.

You need to do all of this on one page, so write the rough draft and then tighten until you’ve got your query down to a page and sounding good.

If you are a fiction writer, your query should follow pretty much the same process as the nonfiction query; except instead of summarizing the article you have in mind, you will summarize the plot (including conflict and resolution) and introduce main characters. More an more magazines that publish short stories want to see a query first before the actual story.

Check the writers’ guidelines for query submission preferences.

When submitting your query, be sure to follow the publication’s writer’s guidelines. Also check it more than once for typographical, grammatical and spelling errors.

After your Query is Submitted

Once you’ve sent out a query don’t wait for a response before preparing the next one. Generally response time is 4 to 6 weeks and far more rejections slips are sent than contracts.

Do not be discouraged by rejections. Often the reason is simply that the proposed article’s topic doesn’t fit their needs.

Other times it could be that your query had grammatical or spelling errors, didn’t capture the editor’s attention, or failed to convince that you can deliver the type of article that fits their magazine’s style and is of interest to their readership.

Most rejection slips are sent because the writer didn’t take a good look at the magazines and guidelines or because the writer didn’t do a good job of hooking the editor at the beginning of the query.

If the editor writes a personal note on the rejection slip, be encouraged and pay attention to what you’re being told because most don’t take the time to do this.

After you send off a query, it’s time to get started on your next one, and another…continue until you get an assignment. After you submit your article, don’t sit back and wait for your check or revisions request. Write another query.

The idea is to keep queries going while writing and researching new assignments so when you get a check you have another soon on the way. This is how you avoid the feast or famine syndrome.

Remember, you can greatly boost your magazine writing career by taking the time to study the publications and writing compelling query letters.

Freelance Magazine Writer – How To Get Started

Let’s face it. It does not matter how well you write if nobody knows it. Not when it comes to making money anyway. In this article you will learn how to become a freelance writer. There are jobs online for you even if you are not at a high skill level yet, but naturally there are more opportunities the better you skill set is.

Finding the Right Service

A freelance writer job is not hard to find, if you know where to look that is. Sadly the online market has been filled with scams that are simply out to get your money. Finding the right job is only easy when you have freelance writer website that actually works. Finding writing jobs online is perfect for someone who wants to make money writing in the comfort of their home or wants to make extra money doing work with very flexible hours.

In my search for a great freelance writer website I have come across so many sites that simply did not work. In most cases I did not even join the sites, simply because there was so many negative comments on blogs and message boards. Luckily I did come across a handful that had a lot positive feedback. I joined them all and found a couple that worked well and one that worked very well.

What Is The Right Service

In this article I am only focusing on the one that I liked the best. The site is called “Real Writing Jobs”, and in my experience it is great if you are a freelance writer for hire. On the site you get access to a lot of different writing jobs. They range from writing blog posts to writing full magazine articles. This means you can start even if you are at a low skill level. The higher your skill level the more jobs you will be able to fill. The site has a great support system, if you have any questions they are quick to answer. In other words, this is the best site I have come across in my years of doing freelance magazine writing.

The Good and the Bad News

Now to the bad news. The site is not free. To get started you need to pay a sign up fee of $5. This will get you access to all the jobs for a 7 days trial period. This means you have 7 days to see how well the service works. After that you have to pay $77 to continue to be a member. After that you are a member for life. I would have liked this service to be free, but there are some positive things to say about this as well. If this was a free service open for everyone, the freelance writer jobs would be harder to get and the price for your work would be much lower. This way you don’t have anywhere near the competition, which means more work and more money for you.

Why Make An Online Magazine?

What Is Different About Online Magazines vs. Websites?

Of course, if you want to get technical, an online magazine is a type of website. This is just like saying that a blog is a website. These days, the differences are blurred, though I still hear people asking if website owners run blogs or websites. The difference between a blog, online magazine, e commerce site, or any other type of website is more about how the content gets presented than the actual format or content management system.

Let me give you an example to illustrate what I mean. In the old days, we used to say that WordPress was “blogging” software. These days, it is pretty safe to say that WordPress is a content management system. You can still use WordPress to run a blog, and many people do, but you can also use this software to run many other types of websites. I have seen very successful directories, review sites, e commerce sites, and online magazines use WordPress.

Advantages Of Publishing An E-Magazine

Let me get back to the topic of the advantages of running an online magazine. Your publication should have a variety of interesting content to attract new visitors and keep your old ones coming back. The online magazine format makes this a lot easier. You should keep updating with fresh content, like articles, pictures, and even video.

Of course, the ability to publish videos, on the web, is one big advantage that online magazines have over traditional paper magazines.

If you do a decent job, your targeted content should be some help when you want to attract traffic, and also, keep them coming back. A magazine can also emphasize subscriptions. These can be free or paid, and the main idea is you will have a way to retain your visitors. You go to considerable effort to bring in new visitors, and it is a big advantage if you can get some of them to return!

This can help you if you want your Internet publication to promote your own opinions, small business, professional services. It can also help you generate revenue for yourself, your business, or an organization.

Most Internet visitors do not want to be “sold” something. They do want to visit websites that will entertain or inform them. In the process of getting informed or entertained, it is possible that they will buy something.

You can use this strategy to your advantage if you support a charity, run a real estate business, or just want to help people learn something.

How Do You Present Yourself As A Magazine?

A lot of the definition of a a magazine comes down to image. However, you can find a lot of themes, for popular content management systems, that will give your website the look and feel of a magazine. You should also work hard to provide interesting and updated content that your visitors will find valuable. This can encourage them to join your publication as a member or subscriber. In this way, you can start to build a lasting community around your publication.
